Google Wallet doesn't let you create a business card pass yourself: passes have to be issued by a business through Google's pass platform. What does Google Wallet actually store?
Google Wallet holds two broad categories of item. The first is payment credentials: cards you tap at a terminal, which work over NFC using host card emulation on the phone. The second is passes: boarding passes, event tickets, loyalty and gift cards, transit tickets, offers, digital IDs in supported regions, and a "generic" pass type used for everything else.
Almost all of those passes are created by an issuer, not by you. A business or developer builds the pass through Google's Wallet API, and the result is an "Add to Google Wallet" button or link. Tapping it saves that specific pass, with the issuer's design and data, to your Wallet.
Google Wallet also has a do-it-yourself route in many regions: you can photograph a barcode or QR code from a physical card and Wallet will store it as a private pass with a name you choose. That feature is aimed at loyalty cards and gym memberships, and availability varies by country and Wallet version, so check your own app before planning around it.
The important limitation for our purposes: a generic pass displays a barcode on screen. It does not transmit your contact details over NFC to another phone. Tap-to-pay is a payments-specific pathway, not a general "beam my card" channel.
Can you add a digital business card to Google Wallet?
If your provider issues a Wallet pass
Some digital business card platforms are registered Google Wallet issuers and generate a pass for each user. If yours does, you'll find an "Add to Google Wallet" button in your dashboard or in the email you got at signup. Tap it on the Android phone you want the pass on, confirm, and it lands in the Passes tab.
If you can't find that button, the platform almost certainly isn't an issuer. There is no way for you to create one on their behalf, and third-party "make your own Wallet pass" tools ask you to hand over your data to an intermediary that then owns the pass. Weigh that before signing up for one.
If you save your own QR code as a generic pass
Where the photo-a-barcode feature is available, you can point Wallet at a printed or on-screen QR code that encodes your card's link, name it something like "My business card," and keep it in the Passes tab. It works. It's also the least flexible option: the stored image is a snapshot, so if you ever change your card's URL you have to delete the pass and add a new one.

Method 1: Add your card to the Android home screen with Chrome
This is the method most people actually want. It gives you a one-tap icon that opens your live card, and it takes under a minute.
- Open Chrome on your Android phone and go to your card's URL, for example a short link like followmysite.com/your-name.
- Wait for the page to finish loading. Chrome offers the shortcut option more reliably on a fully loaded page.
- Tap the three-dot menu at the top right.
- Tap Add to Home screen. On some versions it appears as Install app when the site supports it, or sits under Share first.
- Edit the name to something short like "My Card" so the label doesn't get truncated on the home screen.
- Tap Add, then either drag the icon where you want it or tap Add automatically.
One refinement makes this genuinely useful: put the icon in the dock or bottom row, where your thumb already goes, so you can get from locked phone to visible card without thinking about it. If the page opens with a full browser address bar, that's normal for a plain shortcut and changes nothing about how the card works.
Method 2: Keep your QR code where you can reach it in two seconds
The home-screen shortcut gets you to your card. What you often need faster is the QR code itself, so someone else can scan it.
Download the QR code image from your card platform, then do at least one of these:
- Favourite it in Google Photos so it sits in the Favourites album rather than buried in a year of camera roll.
- Set it as your lock screen wallpaper if you meet a lot of people at events. Slightly unusual, extremely fast, and it works even when the phone is locked.
- Save it as a generic Wallet pass, if your Wallet app offers the photograph-a-barcode option, so it lives beside your loyalty cards.
- Add it to a note pinned at the top of Google Keep, which also lets you keep your link as selectable text you can paste into a chat.
A practical detail people miss: raise your screen brightness before someone scans. A dim screen behind a matte protector is a common reason a scan fails, and many phones have a quick-settings tile for maximum brightness worth keeping in the first row.
Method 3: How do you share your card by NFC between two Android phones?
Here's where a lot of online advice is out of date. Android Beam, the old feature that pushed a link phone-to-phone over NFC, was removed years ago. Modern Android phones do not send contact details to each other over NFC by default.
What they do have is Quick Share (previously Nearby Share), which uses Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to move links and files between nearby devices. It's faster and more reliable than the old NFC handshake, and it works at conversational distance rather than requiring the phones to touch.
- Open your card in Chrome and tap the three-dot menu, then Share.
- Choose Quick Share.
- Ask the other person to pull down their quick settings and turn Quick Share on, set to receive from everyone or from contacts.
- Tap their device when it appears, and they accept.
The catch is obvious: it only works Android-to-Android, and it needs the other person to do something. For a stranger at a conference, the QR code is still faster, because scanning is a habit they already have. Use Quick Share for colleagues; use the QR code for everyone else.

Method 4: Use your Android phone to write your link to an NFC tag
This is the part iPhone users mostly can't do casually and Android users can. If your phone has NFC hardware, it can write to blank NFC tags and stickers, not just read them. That turns your phone into a small production line for tap-to-open cards.
- Buy blank NTAG-series stickers or cards. NTAG213 holds a short URL comfortably; NTAG215 and 216 give you more room and better read range on some tags.
- Turn NFC on: Settings, then Connected devices or Connections, then NFC.
- Install a tag-writing app such as NFC Tools or NXP TagWriter from the Play Store.
- Choose Write, then add a record of type URL, and enter your card link exactly, including https://.
- Hold the tag against the NFC antenna on the back of your phone. On most Android phones it sits near the top third of the back panel; on some it's centred. Move slowly until the app confirms.
- Test it with a second phone before you write twenty more.
- Optionally lock the tag once you're happy. Locking prevents anyone overwriting it, but it is permanent, so only lock tags whose URL will never change.
The URL you write matters more than the tag. Write a short, stable link that points at your live card rather than a long tracking URL, because a link you might need to change later is exactly the wrong thing to burn onto a locked tag. Tags are cheap enough to put in useful places: one on the back of your phone case, one on your laptop lid, one at the reception desk, one on a product sample. For most people the honest recommendation is a combination: home-screen shortcut plus QR code plus one or two NFC tags in fixed places. Wallet passes are a nice-to-have, not the foundation.
Troubleshooting
NFC is on but nothing happens when I tap
Check three things in order. First, that NFC is genuinely enabled rather than just present in settings; some phones disable it in battery saver mode. Second, the antenna position, which varies by model — move the tag slowly across the upper back of the phone rather than holding it in one spot. Third, the case: thick cases, metal plates and magnetic mounts can block NFC. Remove the case and retest before blaming the tag.
The Wallet pass won't save
If an "Add to Google Wallet" link does nothing, open it in Chrome rather than an in-app browser inside a mail or messaging app, which is the usual culprit. Beyond that: make sure the Google Wallet app is installed and updated, that you're signed into the right Google account, and that your region supports the pass type. If a pass saves but shows the wrong details, the issuer has to reissue it; you can't edit a pass locally.
My QR code won't scan in low light
Raise screen brightness to maximum, turn off any blue-light or dark-mode filter that dulls contrast, and clean the screen. Hold the phone still and ask the other person to move their camera rather than moving yours. If the code is printed, matte stock scans better than gloss under venue lighting, and a code shrunk into the corner of a badge is far harder to lock onto than one that fills the screen.
The link opens but the page looks broken
Usually one of three causes. The other person is on a captive Wi-Fi network that hasn't been accepted, so nothing loads; ask them to switch to mobile data. Or an in-app browser inside a social app is rendering the page badly, in which case "Open in browser" fixes it. Or the link was typed rather than scanned and has a typo. Test your own card on mobile data with the Wi-Fi off at least once a quarter.
Keeping your details current
The reason to keep everything pointing at a URL rather than at stored data is that people you met last year should see this year's phone number. A few habits keep that true.
Change details in one place: your card profile, not on each tag or saved image. Anything that stores a copy of your data rather than a link to it — a saved contact in someone's phonebook, a downloaded vCard file, a Wallet pass with your details baked in — is a snapshot that will drift.
Keep the URL stable even when the content changes. Rebranding your services, swapping your photo or adding a booking link should never require a new address. If you do move to a custom domain, keep the old link redirecting for as long as you can, because tags and printed codes in the wild will keep using it.
Check your visitor analytics occasionally. A tag that stops registering visits is usually a physical problem: it's fallen off, been covered, or has a metal mount over it.
And re-download your QR code after any change to your link. The image itself doesn't update retroactively, so an old code on your lock screen can quietly point somewhere dead. Everything else about your card — services, catalogue, gallery, booking, enquiry form — can change freely without touching the code, which is the whole advantage over print. What about the iPhone users you meet?
None of the Android-specific methods matter to them, and that's fine, because the QR code and the plain link are cross-platform by nature. A recent iPhone will also read an NFC tag you wrote, usually without any app, as long as the screen is on and unlocked.
The one thing that doesn't transfer is the pass itself: a Google Wallet pass can't be added to Apple Wallet, and vice versa, because each is tied to its own platform's pass format.
